Elegant Grad Photos at Spruce Meadows | Calgary Graduation Photographer

Every once in a while, a graduation session comes together in a way that feels a little magical—and this one absolutely did.

When she shared with me this stunning red gown and delicate tiara, I knew we’d want the session to feel like we just stepped straight into a modern fairytale. The flowing dress, the sparkle of the crown, and the soft spring blossoms at Spruce Meadows created the perfect setting for something truly special.

Graduation is such an important milestone—a moment that marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Capturing that transition in a way that feels personal, elegant, and timeless is always my goal when I photograph grad sessions in Calgary.

And on this day, everything aligned beautifully.

Spring Blossoms at Spruce Meadows

We began the session surrounded by the soft blossoms that bloom around Spruce Meadows in the spring.

The delicate pink flowers paired perfectly with the deep red of her gown, creating a dreamy contrast that felt both romantic and vibrant. These quiet moments at the beginning of a session are often some of my favourites—the excitement is building, the light is soft, and there’s a sense that something wonderful is about to unfold.

Grad sessions are always a collaboration. Some graduates want an urban downtown vibe, others prefer the mountains or open fields. For this session, we leaned into something a little more classic and elegant—and Spruce Meadows provided the perfect backdrop.

A Dress Made for a Graduation Celebration

Sometimes a dress becomes part of the story—and this one certainly did.

The rich red colour, the flowing layers of fabric, and the elegant silhouette created beautiful movement throughout the session. Whether she was walking through the blossoms or standing on the stone pathways, the dress added drama and grace to every frame.

Graduation photos are about celebrating personality and style. Some grads arrive in jeans and sneakers, others bring formal gowns, and many bring multiple outfits to create different looks. There is no right or wrong approach—the most important thing is that the images feel authentic to you.

The Elegance of Spruce Meadows

Spruce Meadows is such a fabulous spot for portraits and she was lucky enough to have connections to get us access to the grounds.

The combination of beautiful gardens, classic architecture, and quiet pathways offers so many different backdrops in one place. For graduation photos, it provides a timeless setting that feels both grand and welcoming.

As we moved through the grounds, we stopped at the stone balustrades and staircases that overlook the property. These architectural elements added an elegant, almost European feel to the session.

It was the perfect stage for a graduation portrait session that felt both sophisticated and celebratory.

The Staircase Moment

If there was one moment in the session where everything truly came together, it was on the sweeping stone staircase.

The movement of the dress, the beautiful structure of the stairs, and the confident energy she brought to the shoot created images that feel both dramatic and timeless.

These are the moments I love most during a grad session—when the graduate relaxes into the experience and their personality really begins to shine.

You can see the excitement of graduation, the pride in reaching this milestone, and the anticipation of everything that lies ahead.

Celebrating the End of One Chapter

Graduation is such a powerful milestone.

It represents years of hard work, growth, friendships, and memories—and it marks the beginning of a whole new chapter. Capturing that moment in photographs allows graduates and their families to remember not just what they accomplished, but who they were at this exact point in their lives.

This session felt elegant, joyful, and full of possibility—the perfect way to celebrate such an important transition.

Planning Your Own Calgary Grad Session

Every graduation session I photograph is designed to reflect the personality and style of the graduate.

Some grads choose elegant locations like Spruce Meadows, others prefer an urban downtown Calgary vibe, and many love the natural beauty of Alberta’s parks and pathways. Together, we plan a session that feels unique to you.

If you're thinking about booking graduation photos in Calgary, I recommend reserving your session several months in advance so we can choose the best location, timing, and light.

Downtown Calgary Grad Photos | Urban Graduation Portrait Session

Calgary graduate in a gorgeous green dress photographed in the Hudson Bay arches in downtown Calgary

Every grad session is a little different, and I love when graduates bring an idea for the overall vibe they’re hoping to create.

This beautiful session was inspired by theatre and city architecture. My grad was one of the leads in her school musical, and she wanted her portraits to reflect that dramatic, elegant energy. Instead of fields or parks, she envisioned something a little more New York City inspired — an urban setting with strong architecture, texture, and a sense of stage.

Downtown Calgary was the perfect place to create that look.

An Urban Grad Portrait Location in Downtown Calgary

One of the things I love about photographing grad sessions downtown is the variety. Within just a few blocks, we can move between:

  • historic architecture

  • dramatic archways and columns

  • modern urban textures

  • open rooftop spaces

Each location creates a slightly different mood while keeping the session cohesive.

For this session, we started in a beautiful covered walkway filled with arches and leading lines. The symmetry of the architecture created a natural frame for her portraits and added that timeless, cinematic feel she was hoping for.

Bringing a Little Theatre Energy to Grad Portraits

Because she had spent the year performing on stage, we leaned into that sense of confidence and presence during the session.

Grad portraits don't have to feel stiff or overly posed. Instead, I guide graduates through natural movement and relaxed posing so their personality comes through in the images.

Sometimes that means a quiet moment leaning against a column.

And sometimes it means letting the dress move and creating a little drama.

Why Downtown Calgary Is One of My Favourite Grad Portrait Locations

Downtown Calgary offers a completely different feel than park locations. For grads who want something a little more editorial or fashion inspired, the city provides:

• beautiful historic architecture
• graphic leading lines
• interesting textures
• dramatic urban backgrounds

It’s a perfect option for graduates who want portraits that feel elegant, modern, and a little bit bold.

The Magic of Adventure Sessions

(and Why Black Friday Is the Best Time to Book One)

When I think back on my favourite moments with families, they’re never the ones where everyone is perfectly lined up and smiling. They’re the moments in between: the laugh that escapes unexpectedly, the kid who takes off running, the parents who soften into each other because—for once—there’s nothing to do but be together.

That’s the heart of an Adventure Session.

These sessions aren’t about perfection. They’re about connection, movement, play, curiosity, and everything that makes your family uniquely yours. They’re about capturing what it feels like to love each other in this moment of your life. And that’s why they remain some of my most cherished sessions to create.

As you’re thinking ahead to what kind of session you want in 2026, here are a few reasons why an Adventure Session might be the best gift you give your family this Black Friday.

1. You’re not rushed — which means everyone relaxed

When families are given time and space to settle in, the magic just happens.
No pressure. No rigid timeline. No “smile at the camera!”
Just an experience that lets your real connections show up naturally.

2. You get to choose a meaningful location

An Adventure Session isn’t limited for location in the same way that a portrait session can be.
You can choose:

  • the mountains

  • your home

  • your favourite place in the city

The location becomes part of the story you’re telling—and it lets your family feel grounded, comfortable, and authentically you.

3. The best light of the day is actually available

Golden hour truly is as magical as everyone says.
But it’s nearly impossible to schedule during busy seasons when you’re juggling school, sports, work, and bedtime.
When we choose a date intentionally, separate from the chaos, we can lean into that gorgeous, flattering light.

4. We pick an activity — and the story unfolds from there

Every Adventure Session is built around something your family loves.
It could be:

  • blowing bubbles in the park,

  • exploring a trail,

  • baking cookies at home,

  • wandering downtown, or

  • taking the family boat out for a spin at the cabin.

The activity becomes the heartbeat of the session, and I document everything that unfolds around it.
This is what makes your gallery feel alive, honest, and full of personality.

5. Your kids’ personalities change fast — these sessions hold onto who they are right now

The way they tuck themselves into your side.
The way they skip instead of walk.
The stuffy they refuse to leave behind.
The giggle that still sounds a little like the toddler they used to be.

An Adventure Session is made to capture the tiny details you’ll want to remember later — the ones that so often slip away.

6. Black Friday is the ONLY time these sessions go on sale

If you’ve been thinking about doing something meaningful next year, this is the moment to say yes.
Black Friday offers my deepest discount of the year — and it won’t return until next November.

There’s no “right” way to capture your family

If you prefer a more traditional session, I’m always happy to create whatever fits your vision.
But if you’re craving something relaxed, meaningful, and full of heart—an Adventure Session might be exactly what you’re looking for.

Ready to make some magic next year?

Your 2026 Adventure Session awaits — and I can’t wait to document your story.

Why You Shouldn’t Schedule Your Grad Photos on Your Actual Grad Day

And Why Black Friday Is the Best Time to Book Your Session!

Graduation is one of those milestone moments that deserves to be documented beautifully. After photographing grads and their families for almost two decades, I’ve learned a thing or two about what makes a session feel relaxed, creative, and truly reflective of who you are at this stage of life.

And with Black Friday offering my best grad session deal of the entire year, this is the perfect time to start planning.

Here’s my biggest piece of advice:

Don’t schedule your grad photos on your actual grad day.

I know this might feel surprising—many people assume grad photos should happen on the same day as the ceremony. But choosing a different day often leads to better images, a smoother experience, and a far more enjoyable session.

Here’s why:

1. Your grad day is already extremely busy.

Hair, makeup, the ceremony, photos with family, dinner plans, and the emotional whirlwind of the entire day… it’s a lot. It’s tough to relax into a photo session when you’re pulled in multiple directions.

Choosing another day allows you to slow down, breathe, and fully enjoy the experience.

2. You can’t predict the weather.

We all know Alberta weather has a mind of its own. When your session is tied to your ceremony date, we lose the ability to adjust to unexpected conditions—rain, wind, heat, or snow.

Another day gives us options and better results.

3. You miss out on the best light of the day.

Grad ceremonies rarely align with golden hour. Most happen mid-day or early evening, creating harsh lighting or tight schedules.

A separate day allows us to plan around the most flattering, dreamy light(like this session which took advantage of golden hour).

4. Being rushed limits creativity.

Your grad session should feel relaxed and fun. When we’re squeezed between events, creativity and exploration become limited.

Choosing another day opens up space for more ideas, variety, and locations(like this session which happened at Dinosaur Provincial Park).

5. You get to wear your grad outfit again.

One more chance to wear your outfit? Yes please.

And without the chaos of the actual day, you’ll enjoy the session so much more.

A gentle reminder

If it’s important to you to have your session on your grad day, we can make that work. Some grads love capturing the energy of the day itself.

Just don’t rule out the flexibility and creativity that come with choosing another date.
