Calgary Family Portraits
More traditional family portraiture for families looking for a more structured family portrait experience. Can be on location or in studio.
Studio or on location? How do I decide?
This is a super common question that I get asked and the simple answer is that I think it is best to mix it up with your family portraits. After all your children have grown and flown the nest, it is nice to have a variety of professional images documenting those years together. So, if you have only ever had portraits done in a park, maybe it’s time to get some done in a studio—and vice versa. I think the real answer lies in looking what you have already had and deciding to add something new into your family archive.
If you are deciding on an outdoor session—no need to worry, I have a long list of suggestions that I will make based on what you are looking for? Kids a little older and you’d like something a bit more urban? I’ve got a dozen ideas for that. Do you feel like your toddler would prefer a place where they could run around a bit? Calgary has no shortage of beautiful parks. And, in the fall, when family photographs are in high demand, I’m an expert at finding out of the way locations with great colourful autumn displays where we won’t have to battle it out with a dozen other photographers. Of course, if you want a demand location, I have ideas on how best to manage that as well. Let’s chat and decide what will work best for your family.
Expecting a baby? Let’s talk about the different options you have to document this time.
When you are looking to document the arrival of a new member of your family—It’s nice to have a couple of different options. I always suggest having at least one of the sessions in your home. And, honestly, if I had it my way, I would make that your newborn session. Yes, I know it’s hard to feel comfortable welcoming someone into your home when you have just had a baby, but, when you have a newborn, your home is like your little nest where you are all just getting to know each other. Plus, it allows for surprise outfit changes, easy stops to breastfeed where you are most comfortable, and snack breaks if necessary.
Maternity sessions are a necessary at least once in your family’s journey. You will want photographs to remember what you looked like when you were expecting. I absolutely love maternity sessions and am always up for trying something new. So, if you have an idea, I’d love to hear it.
And, finally, I always want to suggest a ‘baby’ session. What does that mean? Well, newborn is a super fast phase that disappears before you know it. Those photographs are because you won’t remember it without them. ‘Baby’ portraits are to capture the baby you will remember—the cheeks, the rolls, the drool and the gummy grins. I always suggest a studio short session for the 6-9 month old period where they sit independently, but aren’t so independent that you can’t corral them.

Think soft natural light, neutral tones, and space to move around. It’s a place where kids can settle in quickly—and where parents don’t feel like they have to manage every second.
